"The Dundies": Best "Office" Ever?
So, as I am an insomniac, I find myself late at night, debating the merits of various episodes from my favorite shows. Tonight, I decided that "The Dundies" was probably the best overall episode of "The Office" so far. But I may be wrong! And I may change my mind the next time I watch an "Office" episode. So let's debate out loud whether "The Dundies" qualifies for the best episode of "The Office" award! Please, pipe in with your own opinions, whether you agree or disagree!
- Jim's saying he didn't want to get cocky, looking at all his Dundees.
- The ongoing obsession with Chili's.
- "A little bit of Angela on the thing."
- Dave Barry shoutout!
- One of the best Jan speaker phone calls EVER. "Really, I'm dropping an atomic bomb on you," Tsunami FUNraiser, et al.
- Steve Carrell, throughout the episode, seriously pulling out every acting chop necessary to display 100,000 different emotions.
- "O.P.P." Flip cards. Self loathing. Horror. Ski caps.
- Oscar's eloquent comparison of Michael to a small child.
- Michael, for his unapologetic delivery of the "you might hit a bump and spill your drink" joke.
- "OH. YEAHhhhhhhh."
- "Like an AIDS test?"
- Pam's silent appeal to Darryl, when she pleads with them not to leave. It's this "blink and you'll miss it" moment, but she totally looks to him for support, which I think says a lot both for Darryl's character, and about Pam's lack of communication with Roy.
- Ping. Oh. NO. I almost want to put it in con, because it's just too horrifyingly awkward, but that is part of what I love most about the show.
- "That's the least of my...concerns right now."
- Angela's curt refusal to accept her "Tightass Award."
- Second drink, the symbolism of which is heartbreakingly articulated by TWoP's Jacob.
- Steve Carrell as Michael usually looks kind of like a cartoon character. A multi-faceted, handsome cartoon character, but still -- it makes the moments where he just looks like a man so jarring. And when Michael starts re-presenting the Dundies, looking proud and somber, he just has about a million things going on inside, and it is really incredible to watch.
- Pam's outfit. It is so terrible, yet/and gives you so much insight into how very little this character knows herself at all. Frustrating, but I do think it makes her more sympathetic. I think she is manipulative, but I really do believe her manipulative tendencies are so secondary to her fear -- not lack -- of self-identity.
- DRUNK PAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Too many moments to mention, because every single thing she does and says is AWEsome, but: "I feel God in this Chili's tonight." AMAZING.
- Stanley. When he makes the joke about not stinking up the bathroom like Kevin, you realize that you've gotten to know Stanley better in this episode.
- Toby's beaming smile when he sees how happy Michael is. I love that no matter how terrible Michael is to Toby, that Toby looks past his pride to make people feel as good as they can about themselves, Michael included. It makes it sort of more sweet that he is in HR, because you get that he genuinely loves seeing people being the best they can be. Man, that is corny. Whatever, I stand by it anyway.
- Naked Dwight...?
- That Jim, as much fun as he has with Drunk Pam, never once tries to take advantage of that. This is the one episode where I really feel you get to GET why Jim loves Pam. And that he does, in fact, love her.
- Not as much "office" in "The Office" as I may prefer
- No Jan in person!
- Eh, I really can't think of anything else. The stuff that I could put as weaknesses, like that I would have liked the warehouse guys to stay more -- well, but it was realistic that they get pissed and go to a chiller bar if they were paying anyway. So yeah, my cons to this ep are halfhearted at best. But again, if you watch "The Office," please give us your opinions!
